I'm not going to lie to you guys, if you live in the state of South Carolina, this one likely does not need much of an introduction. If you don't live in the state of South Carolina and you find yourself in Downtown Columbia, SC with some time to kill, a stop at The South Carolina State Museum is not a disappointment.
Nestled on a corner of Gervais and Huger streets amid the hustle and bustle of downtown, the SC State Museum is one of my favorite attraction in Columbia, SC. Ever changing featured exhibits, and a plethora of events always make a visit worth the time.
Though the special features and rotating exhibits are an excellent addition to the museum, it's best not to overlook the many impressive standard exhibits such as dinosaur skeletons and South Carolina habitat displays. Within the walls of the state museum is also a 145 seat, 55 foot dome theater that allows visitors to embark on immersing journeys through art, history, space, and of course the occasional laser light show set to music from the Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and more. The Planetarium also has a permanent NASA display in the lobby.
If you find yourself worn out and ready to refuel, they have you covered there as well with the Museum cafe. And one you're recharged, pay a visit to the observatory, a 2,500 sqft space that features a 1926 Alvan Clark refracting telescope and an outdoor viewing terrace.
If you need to take a load off for a while, try a show at the 4D theater that has featuring shows playing multiple times a day. The truth is that I could go on and on about this place, I have been many times and I will be back many more. No amount words that I can say or pictures will do it justice. So if you have never been, get over there and take a look for yourself. If you have been, go back and see what's new.
