Are you or your family wondering if it is time to sell your home and move to a senior community? Or perhaps move in with an adult son or daughter? It can be hard to think about leaving the family home filled with a lifetime of memories. In fact, sometimes it is harder on adult children than on those considering the move.

Many seniors prefer aging in place, but there often comes a time when that is no longer practical for a variety of reasons.

  • Home maintenance becomes a burden
  • A major life event forces considering a move
  • Financial concerns make it difficult to keep your home
  • Support services are needed that are not available at home
  • You want to live closer to adult children or other caretakers

Even if you have bought and sold homes and moved in the past, selling your home where you have lived much of your life is different. Often other family members are involved, and you may have a lifetime of treasures you have collected that keep you from moving because you don’t know what to do with all your ‘stuff’ if you move.

Often families help sort through questions such as…

  • Is moving the best alternative? If so, where? Have you looked at other options?
  • Is your immediate family on board with your decision to sell?
  • What is the best way to downsize a lifetime of possession and family heirlooms?
  • What are the tax implications of a sale?
  • What effects will a sale have on your future income?

Selling homes of people moving to assisted living has been one of my niches for years.  It's definitely something that sellers have to wrestle with when selling that last home.  As you point out it's a decision that really needs to be well thought out with family in the know of what and why you are doing it.

It is often a difficult decision for everyone involved. It goes so much more smoothly when Realtor, seller and family have built a network of trust... and everyone has the seller's best interests in mind.

I find the big issue it trying to get rid of the excess personal property when NO family  is in the area.

I Move You Home

Given that 40% of all homes in the US are free of a mortgage, I'm wondering why more Boomers aren't moving.  The house is the retirement plan for some, and it's just too much work for others.  If they are living without a mortgage, they have no motivation to take one on. I'm thinking that the real reason that there aren't more listings is that those that can don't know the next step, and what their options are.

I agree that part of the reason the housing supply is low is because not as many Boomers are moving as in previous generations. Many Boomers are also working longer and living about 30 years longer than in previous generations... which in turn stretches out everything else in the process. Often it takes some sort of major life event to spur change if they don't plan to make a change when they retire.
