The Value of Life

Turned the TV Valentine’s evening erupted in the news that you wouldn’t want to hear… But this is the news the nation hears too often…

Let’s stop guns, let’s treat mentally ill, let’s report the strange behavior to authorities…and children keep dying senselessly…

And even if you take AR-15 out of hands of the population, and take AK out of hands of the population, and treat mentally unstable better, and report more, do you believe it will stop the killing?

Because you can kill with other guns, not as powerful, but any gun can kill…

But you can kill with knives, forks, baseball bats, stones, bare hands…

There are too many ways to kill …

Killing happens only where there is no value of the life of other people, no sharing of the pain of other people… It is like a computer game when the more you kill, the better you are… and this attitude is taken to real people around you…

How come we are the only nation that has this problem, at least of this magnitude? And we are among the most developed country in the world?

But if we do all of the above and it does not stop the killings, what we are missing?

We are missing the value of life. The sanctity of life… This is what these children-killers do not understand. They do not value the life of others. They are freaking cold blooded with no notion of pain. The only pain they understand is theirs…

And until killing is cool among teenagers, and until there is a cult of it, we are not going to get anywhere. It should become such a no-no, that even thinking about it should be uncool... Then, with all other things, we may hope for a change...

We need to start teaching kids the value of life. Start with grade one. And keep doing it, keep talking to them about life, about pain about loss. We need to build the moral barrier to taking life.

It breaks my heart. We have to do something. I agree with  you completely.  I did read a grandmother in Everett, Washington turned in her grandson who was planning a mass shooting. Thank goodness the police believed her.  My heart aches for children who are fearful to go to school because the reality is, they may not come back home.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - if I still had kids school age, I would be fearful of letting them go to school. I can't imagine being afraid of kids not coming back, and this is is a real chance... What kind of war is this?

I don't know, Jon. Wish I had the answers, but I do know we need better managment of guns - and need to wake up to the issues of mental health.

Jon- I am still heartbroken over the loss of these 17 lives, as well as the impact the shooting has had on the whole community. I was listening to the news today and they plan on tearing down the building. Drugs are illegal and yet look how rampant they are. We had a shooting last week that took several lives and it was linked to drugs. I too don't know that answer but I do know there isn't just one.

It's a heart matter, not a gun matter.  When the heart is wrong, there is always a way to do wrong and when the heart is right, there is always a way to do right.

Judi K Barrett - very true... But it is our duty to make sure that people, whose heart is wrong, would not have this easy time killing others. Yes, guns are an instrument, but if these individuals with no heart want to kill others, it should not be so easy.

But you are right, there is something wrong that the most advanced country in the world has this problem and does not even want to discuss it.
