Parade Searcy AR Spring St historic photo 1955

What a great picture of a parade in Searcy AR dated Oct 1955 but possibly taken during the Fair Parade in September?  There's a police car, a fire truck and folks watching AND remember parking meters?  There's one in the background.  Most of interest, however, is the old train station that was located at the corner of this Spring Street and Pleasure Street and across from Spring Park.  It was reportedly a lovely building.  We happen to have an old picture of it, too.

Wasn't it beautiful?  Seeing it in this picture makes me wonder about the rail line.  Does it end here at the corner?  Was it across the street so folks walked across what is now Pleasure Street to get on the train?  I am sure some of the Searcy Sleuths know the answer and will comment.  One thing we do know now is that this historic structure was still standing in 1955 and perhaps someone will remember when it was taken down.  Thanks to Sherry Quattlebaum Person for sharing the 1955 picture.

And the second photo was taken by Paula Windsor Thompson who went around Searcy taking pictures when she was a young girl.  Click here to go see the other pictures of old Searcy that she contributed to this blog.  She has passed on but we owe her a big, big thanks for recording Searcy landmarks.

When I look at wonderful old pictures like that, I am taken back to simpler times.

I missed that parade. I went into basic training in the U.S.A.F. January 28th 1955.

Paula's pic are true treasures. Most are 2 1/2" by 2 1/2". I have them all.

Myrl, they do bring back memories.

Don, the nice thing about the scanner is that the pictures  come out larger so detail shows up better.  I had a few tears as I reviewed the tribute that I did for her.  Those pictures are priceless.

Barbara, In 1955, the building in the photo was the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific RR Depot, located at the NE corner of Spring and Pleasure. . The Doniphan, Kensett & Searcy RR depot was located east of Spring Park on South Main Street and just south of today's Park Avenue Baptist Church. I would be happy to mail you a map, if you like.

Jim, it is good to have you come in and tell us exactly how it was.  I believe you did send me a map several years ago and I still have it.  I was just negligent in checking it.  Thanks for commenting and stay with us!!

The March issue of the White County Historical Society has a nice article about the Rock Island RR along with a picture of the depot in Searcy.

Roger, I saw that picture.  I am a member of the Historical Society and think they do a great job with their newsletters.  Did you notice that my daughter is the star of the front page?  Well, actually the star is the tree but we were listing the house beside it and I took her picture and they chose it for the cover.  Also, notice, I think, that we have for sale the house right beside the one your relatives lived in?  408 E Park.  It is already under contract.
