Pay attention to your spidey sense,

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential

I received a phone call, midafternoon, from a new agent. She was sitting an open house, and her voice sounded a touch shakey.

She said she was just calling to run some numbers with me...  "Are you at your open house?", I asked.

"Yes", she said "Yes, that's right".. something hollow in her voice.

"Is someone there that's making you feel uncomfortable... someone giving you that creepy vibe?"

She said "Hold on"... and I hear:  her say "I'll be with you in just a moment, sir"... then to me "Yes....that's right"

"I'll be right there... stay on the phone... while I get there... I'm about 5 minutes away".

While we continued to talk... about contracts, and lines 33, 34, and 35... no idea what we were talking about... I got there, and everything was fine.  He had left.

But while he was there, she got that "creepy" vibe.  A sole young woman, alone in a strange house, with an even stranger man who was asking somewhat inappropriate personal questions.

She was clearly a bit shaken... a strong woman, taken by surprise by her vulnurability... and apologized for calling me.

Not even close.  She did exactly the right thing.  I'd rather show up, for no reason... trust your gut.  When your spidey sense is tingling... there's a reason.  Don't ignore your spidey sense.

Alan, this is exactly the type reason we stopped doing open houses long ago.  Just too much risk to us, to our sellers, etc.  We've taken the approach that is a buyer is truly serious about the home, they'll schedule with their agent or call us.  And if they call us, they're getting me since Liz hasn't shown a home solo since....well, I don't remember when because I've gotten significantly older since that last time.

Alan- I always knew you were a good guy, but now you're our hero!!!  I'm glad that your agent trusted her gut and called you!  I too understand why those new to the business hold open houses because it's a good way for them to possibly meet new clients and get their feet wet.

Oddly enough I had a creeper yesterday post close time at my office.  I happened to be on the phone and of course I was armed. I supose he was really harmless, but today when someone pulled into the lot after hours I locked the door and they can come back during business hours when no one is alone there.
