Andrew Jackson was born in Columbus, Nebraska back in 1886 to John and Annie. He attended Creighton Prep High School however, he was expelled for fighting. He joined the Nebraska Army National Guard reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. In 1906, he moved to Mobile, Alabama to enter the lumber business.
He founded his business in 1922, more on that in a moment. He exported lumber from the Philippines, Central America and Africa. He needed a fleet to haul the cargo so he started building his own. At one time, he owned the largest fleet of sailing ships under American registry. What the issue was he needed shallow draft vessels to maneuver the waterways.
His true calling didn’t come about until WWII and of course that is the rest of the story. Due to his experience in building boats with a shallow draft he built a series of landing craft known as “Higgins boats”. So, Andrew Jackson Higgins was responsible for building those Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) boats that transported personnel from the larger ships to the shores.
With his guidance, there were over 20,000 of his boats built, thus insuring the Allies of victory. Even Adolf Hitler bitterly dubbed him the “New Noah”. Until tomorrow keep a smile on your face and a penny in your pocket.
