The Carlsbad Flower Fields Will Open March 1, 2018
Our well-known, and popular, Flower Fields in Carlsbad will be opening to the public on March 1, less than a week away.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are spectacular, as this photo and video show, but it takes a while to reach their peak (typically mid-March to mid-April depending on the seasonal conditions) so don’t expect this beauty on day 1, but it’s fun to anticipate what lies ahead. (video is from 2015.)
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are a very popular tourist attraction and have been for over 60 years. For those who don't know, the Flower Fields are about 50 acres of brightly colored Ranunculas. And once they start blooming they get more beautiful by the day.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are open for less than 3 months annually, typically opening March 1, and traditionally close Mother’s Day which is May 13th in 2018.
In addition to the beautiful flowers, the Carlsbad Flower Fields offer a host of special events and things to do...more and more each year it seems:
- Orchid greenhouse
- Historic Poinsettia display
- Kids Day, multiple musical events including Blues Day, arts and crafts, Girl Scout Day, flower-arranging workshops
- A special Mother’s Day Celebration on Closing Day, May 13th
- School tours and programs
- An "American Flag" of colorful flowers blooming on the south side of the fields – you can see it from Palomar Airport Road at Armada by Costco
You can enjoy walking through the fields to experience the flowers close up, or take a ride on their antique tractor wagon to really appreciate the beauty of Carlsbad’s beautiful Flower Fields, and it's easier on the feet!
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are easily seen from the I-5 Freeway if you look to the east (as long as you aren't driving!) at the Palomar Road Exit (look for the windmill) and adjacent to the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Mall.
But in my opinion the best vantage point (AND IT’S FREE!!) is looking down on the fields from Armada Drive that runs along the top of the hills. The views, when the flowers are blooming, are spectacular, along with the Carlsbad windmill and 180 degree views of the ocean.
