The Hampton Roads/Williamsburg area of Virginia has it's share of military bases. As a result, I have had the honor of working with several military clients.
One of my most memorable transactions was a listing for an army officer whom I never met. I "inherited" this listing from an agent in our office who was moving.
I spoke with my new client on the phone several times before he deployed to Afghanistan.
His story was so sad it could have inspired several country songs. He was going through a divorce, his wife had taken his children and moved to another state. Just before deploying he had surgery and had to recover alone in a apartment. Before he sold his house a group of teenage boys broke into his house, spend the night and left a real mess in one of the bathrooms!
The house had lost value after the bubble so my client was about to deplete his savings and dip into his 401k to avoid foreclosure when we finally got a purchase offer on his house. The buyers almost blew a gasket because he wouldn't have the shutters painted. The HOA had sent a letter to them and they were adamant that he should have them painted right away. You can read more about that in this blog.
While I didn't love hearing about all of the difficulties that Bill was enduring, I learned more about the specific kinds of sacrifices that our military personnel make.
At times I wanted to scream because the other agent and the buyers were so totally self centered and seemed as if they didn't care about Bill's sacrificial service.
What I did love was the fact that he never lost his focus on the task at hand, which was helping to keep our country safe!
