What Do You Think Makes a Good Leader?

Recently when I was listening to some people who were in positions of leadershipleadership, the thought occurred to me that they didn’t appear to be exhibiting what I would consider traits that mark a good leader.

Think back on people you’ve worked for who were ones you’d follow to the ends of the earth. And of course, there’ve been those you wouldn’t follow down the hall for a cup of coffee.

And as I often do, I began talking to myself about what makes a good leader.

What makes a good leader?

1.These are the people you turn to when you want to get something done.

You know that the buck stops with them. And, if something is going to get done it will be that person that does it. They are also the ones that are knee deep in other projects.

2.Leaders do what is best for all, and not just themselves.

Too often politics in an office or organization (or in politics) will get in the way and the goal becomes win at all costs.

The wise leader can see the whole picture and if that means that their team or their group may have to take a step back they do what is best for the majority.

3.Leaders admit when they’re wrong or made a mistake and move to make things right.

No one’s perfect. We all make mistakes. Leaders know this and are committed and strong enough to admit it and find a solution to what is wrong.

4.A good leader has a set of principles or rules (like Gibbs’ rules) by which they live.

We know what they will do because they have rules that guide them. We expect it of them.

leadership5. A good leader knows when to call in the troops.

They have others to turn to when they don’t know the answer.

6.A good leader listens to others and weighs the facts.

They are confident in their own skin and understand that listening to others is not a sign of weakness.

7.A good leader wants to see others succeed.

There is no ego that needs to be fed.

8. A good leader leads by doing.

They wouldn’t think of asking anyone to do what they wouldn’t think of doing.

9. A good leader sees beyond what is but sees what could be.

In a nutshell, they have vision.

10. You fill in the blank!

There are more, I’m sure, but it was at this point that I stopped discussing the subject with myself and thought I’d ask you to chime in.

So, what do you think? What do you think makes a good leader?

Patricia Feager rare qualities, indeed.  So many remind me of the Emperor's new clothes tale.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel so agree. They must be confident in their own skins!

Hi Tammy Lankford, agreed. They know how to delegate and communicate.

JL Boney, III you're teaching your children well!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS,CRB and that's a quality that many don't get. They may have vision, and are willing to listen to others but they must be able to communicate this vision of theirs.

Lottie Kendall another great point!  A good leader realizes and recognizes that they are where they are because of a team effort.

Goodness Trent Dalrymple (248) 854-0625 that's no way to inspire a team!

Hi Kathy - I went right to this title because I love the topic.  I actually ask people in one of my sessions to list what makes a good leader. The school of thought today is that there are many qualities and they fit the situation.  Some leadership qualities of a combat commander might not be appropriate for leader of a non profit for example.

Morning Kathy.

A good leader wants everyone to succeed, while sacrificing their own interests.  Its all about making those who work for you successful

In my years of Navy and corporate America time and I've worked for some not so really good leaders.  One that sticks out to me as how NOT to do things:  we were having a team meeting because some things were not going well at a supplier.  Our director states we'd better get it fixed ASAP because the problems were affecting HIS bonus.  Yeah....I felt supermotivated after that.

On the other hand the Commanding Officer on my 2nd ship may have been about the best leader I ever had.  He understood how to take care of his crew and support them.  I've still got great respect for him and it's almost 28 years later.  Bill

Kathy, what a great list of leader attributes.

If I were to add anything, it would be: Lead by example.

A superior leader determines the action necessary for the most suitable solution that's available from their resources to accomplish their goals and objectives. Leaders don't procrastinate, they prioritize, analyze and create a winning strategy by making decisions or taking action to implement it quickly.

Unfortunately, lately we have seen far too many examples of what doesn't make a good leader.

I love your list...great job! Seems like you put a lot of thought into this.

The first thing I thought of when I read your title was compassion.

I totally agree. We had a discussion last night about two different ways of getting people to do something. One way was to demand it. The other was to make it a team effort ("imagine if WE obtained this goal-- it would help everyone"). The second way was the winner in terms of leadership style!
