Tornado Warning and Showings

"If you really want to do something, you'll find a way.  If you don't you'll find an excuse."

Jim Rohn

You may be reading the title and thinking to yourself, "Tornado Warning???"  That sounds more like a reason than an excuse to cancel showings."

 -------

Even though my referred buyers were from out-of-town, they grew up in the Oklahoma metro area and were familiar with the ever-changing weather.  Some viewing days were heat filled, while others required a jacket.  Some were "blow your socks off" windy and other days we could barely catch a breeze.  And, when the tornado watch announcement aired just hours before our showings, the question was not "Should we cancel?" but "When did they say it was coming our way?"

*Raised eyebrows?

This is not one of those times when I rushed home to call my mom. In fact, this may be the first time she is hearing of that mid May day.

With reconfirmed showing times and the local news app loaded to our phones, we proceeded as planned.  The first few showings were greeted with clear skies and a home of possible interest.  As we neared the last two showings, things started to get an overcast.

The news app was sending alerts and the meterologist's voice could be heard as I unlocked the lockbox.  Upon entering the home, it only took a moment for the buyers and I to agree that saving the remaining showings for another day might be best.  Concerned, not just for our lives, but for the ones who vacated their homes to accommodate the showings.

Soon afterwards, the announcement changed from a tornado watch to a tornado warning.  According to the news, we were not in immediate danger - but had we stayed our course we could be within an hour.

Writing this post for a couple of reasons:

One, I am so thankful to live in a state that is constantly improving the severe weather warning system.  Two, an acknowledgement that sometimes I may be taking the words of Jim Rohn a little too far?

Great story Alesha A. Wilson, M.Ed., MRP but you forgot to tell us if the house was still there the next day . Of course we have tornado's here as well but much much smaller and they are enough of an oddity that if there is a warning or even one spotted on the ground everyone here rushes out to see it.

Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry. Not a lot of tornadoes here, but I think I would try to show only brick homes if they were calling for them.

The weather forecasters are good at what they do and we need to take notice and warning. Glad you were safe and sound.

Alesha- glad you were safe ! Technology has gotten better at predicting tornadoes and other weather events so it’s a good idea to heed the warning.

Hello Bob "RealMan" Timm
You are right.  I did not finish the story.  Happy to report that all of the homes viewed that day are still standing.
Some warnings do not result in "The Big One" - but since we really never know, we take precaution.
We also have our fair share of (unofficial) storm chasers

Thank you Debbie Reynolds.  Even in uncertain conditions they try to keep us informed.  I am sure it gets tricky trying to report without sending a "cry wolf" vibe.

Good morning Kathy Streib.
Thank you!  I can only imagine what the warning system is like in Florida - with the occasional massive rotating water.

Good morning Grant Schneider.
I can only imagine if we had the winter weather you have.  When the half foot of snow chances are announced here, our grocery stores go bare overnight (as if we will be home bound for a week).  I think we like the idea of it

Alesha, all I can say is WOW... when I was selling homes in Boston,MA it took a Nor'easter to cancel showings... then when I relocated to Los Angeles a little rain and everyone was canceling showings.... so clearly it is about locations...Endre

And thank you for introducing me to a new term "Nor'easter"
