Hiking Log - Discipline

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

This is part seven of excerpts from the trail log which was located on a New York portion of the Appalachian trail. For the post which explains this series, click here.

Following is my selection of this week's thoughts of a hiker.

August 1, 2016

The Man W/No Name: Done 17, goin' for 40 miles w/out stopping feeling loopy. if I DIE TRYING know: my mind had the discipline to force my body past the limit and that is what greatness is made of.

I'm going to keep my comments very short on this one, since almost everything that needs to be said is in that one blog entry. I do believe that self-discipline can help us do amazing things. Discipline, coupled with vision, motivation and determination are unstoppable.

Did "The Man W/No Name" make it 40 straight miles without stopping? I have no idea. That's a very long way and sounds impossible to me. But would it have been impossible for someone with discipline, vision, motivation and determination? I think not.

Joan - Anyone who hikes those long distances, especially when they are camping out and carrying all their gear, get HUGE kudos from me!

When one of my sons joined the Marines he ended up in their special forces unit, he told me the training for that was very much a matter of the mind, lots of bigger, stronger guys dropped out of selection. It was all about what you decided you could or couldn't do. I think your hiker made it, or like to think he did.

Kat Palmiotti - This has been a great series. From the people I know who hiked from ME to GA they were ALL changed when they got through. Endurance! Perseverance! All that can change. Once you start going, there isn't anything in between or short cuts on the trails. I really enjoy this series, the log remarks, and your thoughts and quotes. This alone could be a great book.

Thanks, Kat! I'm enjoying the series very much.

Nick/Trudy - I agree, it really is mind over matter.

Patricia - It must take a lot of work to make it through the entire trail. Lots of hard work! I'm glad you are enjoying this series. I'll keep them coming!

Life on the trail sounds exhausting. My nephew hiked the Pacific trail and covered over 1000 miles. He has lots of tall tales Kat Palmiotti

Good morning again Kat. I tell myself  I won't stop on my morning walks. I do about a mile and a half and don't stop but 40 miles would be amazing.

Kat, what a great instructive lesson from your very ambitious hiker who shared his aspirations in your AT logbook.

What a great choice to quote Calvin Coolidge as his words are so true.  I experienced that season after season in helping coach varsity football and girls basketball as many times our teams with lesser talent upset state ranked teams because of our athletes'  incessant and relentless hard work, superior conditioning, and mental preparation for the game at hand.  This whole attitude explains the greatness of America!!!

Sheila - Keep doing those walks! It's such a good habit!

Bruce - Yes! I love your example. Hard work, conditioning and mental preparation are huge!

Endre - Haha, it's always hard to start a regimen of exercise, but good for you for continuing. Walking daily is really great for you!

Hi Kat

This was fun to read and ponder...but I cannot imagine walking that far without stopping. We have several sets of friends who are avid hikers and I'm always impressed with what they do, including that walk someone else mentioned in Spain!

Jeff - I also am impressed with anyone that does one of those long trails. I can't imagine months on a trail.

Kat,

what is the longest hiking trail you ever done? And where it was?

Inna - I haven't done anything worth mentioning. No overnights on a trail for this girl (at least not yet). The longest hike was probably about a 6 hour round trip hike. We did several in different parts of Montana. In NY, we did a few trips up a mountain and down - maybe 4 hours round trip. But that's it! I can't claim any big hikes.

Great post Kat. There are so many parts to this I suppose. Discipline, determination, commitment to a goal, a vision. Maybe they are all the same thing. Any way you cut it, I love it. Nothing motivates me more than inspirational stories of other people's successes and overcoming the odds. Thank you again for sharing!!
