Observations about the importance of ‘Priorities’ and ‘Time Blocking” by a Beverly Hills Realtor: Endre Barath, Jr.

www.endrebarath.com

Having had my own business aka being a Beverly Hills Realtor for over 24+ years, I have learned that “Priorities” are key for long term survival and prospering, not just in Real Estate, but in any business. Not only is prioritizing critical, but it must be directly connected to “Time Blocking”. No matter who you are, or what you do, all your business decisions as well as your success will depend how good you are at these two factors.

The most important commodity anyone has is ‘Time’, every day we have 24 hrs. and what we do with it will determine our level of achievement aka the level of success we achieve daily and ultimately in our business as well as in our lives.

Interestingly over the span of time, I have noticed we have had increasingly more and more ‘Time Wasters’ creep into our lives. The more effective we are identifying and eliminating these “time wasters” the more balanced our lives become. This must almost become second nature, or should I say intuitive.

The list of time wasters is just incredibly large, just a few examples:  when I was young there were thirteen TV channels and that was in the late 1960’s early 1970’s and to boot this was in a large Metropolitan area, Metropolitan New York City  Television Broadcasting, which covered Bridgeport, CT that is. Now let me ask you: how many channels do we have now?

Fast forward to the 1990’s when the Internet became available to the public as far as I am concerned all the good the World Wide Web has done there is a dark side to it as well, meaning “time wasting” has exponentially increased.

Hard to believe that Social Media has only been around since the late 1990 and FB only came about 2003/2004-time frame. Talk about the ultimate Time Waster, it is hard to believe but FB has been around for less than fourteen years.

Needless to say, the wonderful aspect of the Internet and the latest technology is, that I can sit at my desk at home, communicate with my clients who are in Australia,  the Middle East, Europe or anywhere on the Globe and we can send and receive offers, instead of having to go to the “office” or to their home to sign documents and better yet not having the send Fed/Ex envelopes all over the globe to accomplish all this.

Hence my point is the better we are at time blocking, the better we are at prioritizing what we do and who do we respond to first will determine how successful we will be in our business.

Endre, It's not where I grew up...it was when I grew up. In the 50's television was still in its infancy and there were only three channels. In the late 60s we probably had the same number as you did but that was so long ago I don't recall.

Excellent post, Endre and you're so right - there are so many more distractions these days than ever before - specifically social media! Thanks Internet! LOL

I LIVE by my calendar and time-blocking is something that I know if I didn't do, I'd be going down those rabbit holes day in and day out. Of course, I wouldn't expect you not to time-block, Brother Endre!

Distractions are everywhere if you allow them to be there...time to play with the cat...try that new recipe....and then there's the net....comes down to how well disciplined are you .....and that is the key to survival...and wait....another new word.....thrival !

Endre, it seems the days we sat somewhere idling time just watching the world go by is gone. Now we are immersed in our various devices.

Interesting post.    Regarding your final photo of the blackberry style phone and what I thought was a good novel:  reading fiction may be considered a "waste of time" nowdays to some people.   But, I fall asleep a lot better after reading than being on facebook or watching TV.     And a good night's sleep is essential for the following day's productivity.

So true Endre!  It's hard to believe how much time we can "waste" at our desks. Time blocking is a great answer to compartmentalizing our business to get as much done as possible.  Hard to believe FB has only been around 14 years!

I try to set timers to limit myself on distractors - of course, I don't always remember to set that timer (:  Removing social media apps from my cell phone has helped tremendously.  I am working on checking social media deliberately instead of out of habit.  Thank you for sharing and Congratulations on the Feature!

We all have the same 24 hours and choose to adopt ways of making the most of that time by prioritizing.
