How wonderful – you and your family have bought a modern farmhouse, one the midcentury modern designs popping up as one of the hottest trends in exterior architectural design.
You will most likely want to carry the Modern Farmhouse theme into the interior of your new home. There are many ways to achieve this by incorporating a few essentials that capture a farmhouse essence and still be the vision of your dream home.
The style should combine the warmth of a farmhouse with a streamlined minimal look -that is cozy and timeless. The following are some tips to help you with design ideas:
1- In the kitchen – install a farmhouse sink. They are deeper than traditional sinks and can be either single-or double basin styles. You can get a stainless steel or copper sink for a more modern feeling instead of the typically porcelain variety.
Kitchen cabinets are an easy way to get to achieve this look. Replace wood door inserts with glass door inserts.
2- Use of barn doors- you can install them as sliding doors for bathrooms or pantries in a white finish or a rustic color. Barn doors are also a great look as a dining table top.
3- Keep it sleek – use white or neutral colors on walls making the space airy and minimal. You can incorporate floating shelves in white or raw wood and use textured materials such as subway tiles, beadboard and shiplap. For accents in the rooms use more raw materials such as burlap on pillows.
4- Reclaimed wood – you can install beams of reclaimed wood in the ceiling or a plan wall installed and either leave it raw or whitewash it. If these options are not for you – a bench or table of reclaimed wood is also a nice touch.
5- Antiques are fun – just use them sparingly – you don’t want to overwhelm the minimalist look you are trying to achieve. Also vintage overhead light fixtures are a good idea.
