It's snowing today in the coastal range of Oregon, Fishhawk Lake area...my ranch in particular. I put out all kinds of seeds and peanut-butter covered bread out for my critters. Today, the oh-so-shy Northern Flicker showed up and dug in for some grub!!
This particular bird doesn't stick around if there's any kind of movement that it notices. I got lucky by being inside in a darker area where it couldn't see me.
Usually their white "butts" are the only thing I see, as they fly away from me! They are quite large birds, measuring about 8" across I'd say.
They can hang out with my Stellar Jays,
Juncos, and Gray Jays
and even my Mallard duck couple that come to visit in the spring,
and no one seems to mind. That is, until one of my Golden Retrievers takes note and heads for the sliding glass door to peer out at the activity!
