Kensett Ar depot with train coming in

Kensett AR depot second view

We have shown several Elvin Davenport old photographs, loaned by Sherry Quattlebaum Person, on this blog.  Reportedly, he roamed the countryside on his bike with his camera handy and loved taking pictures of trains.  These two say Kensett on the depots even though you have to enlarge them to read the sign.

My question is why the depots look slightly different?  Did Kensett have two depots?  Is this the same train track?  Folks also say that Elvin got so close to the trains that he had to quickly get out of the way and therefore lots of the photos are slightly blurred.

Perhaps someone who remembers the town of Kensett back then can clear this us.  Notice one of the photos is dated 1962.  The other has no date.

My grandmother, Margaret Foster was Elvins cousin. I do remember Elvin and I don’t think he rode a bike, but would walk everywhere. I can see him with his camera around his neck taking pictures at Spring park like it was yesterday! He stayed at Stotts, and Headlee drug store talking and visiting every day!

Sharon, thanks for that comment.  Perhaps he had a bike for going further than Spring Park and downtown?  We have several pictures that he took in the park.  I have done one or two on this blog.  I hope you saw them.

the top photograph, the cars in the background appear to be from the 40's . I grew up in Kensett but both were prior to my time there

Jeff, thanks.   So one of them could have been much older than the dated one.  Interesting!

Although I don't remember seeing this myself, there were stories of Elvin riding his bike around town with a chicken perched on the handle bar. And yes, he did hang out around Headlee Drug...probably got his pictures developed there.

Judging from the cars the photo on top looks a few years older. Both photos have the slanted T-post. I believe it's the same depot.

Thomas, he must have been quite a character and now we may be making him famous because of the old pictures that he took.  People can google his name and the blogs will pop up!

Steve, the pictures must have been a few years apart and the depot was worked on in the meantime.  Thanks for the comment.

While this is two photos of the same depot, Kensett did have a small depot for the old M&NA railroad that was very near this one. The building for the M&NA is still standing and can be seen on the old railroad bed next to what was the Kensett Hotel.

There was at least one other station at Kensett. My grandfather, G.A. Walter, was depot agent for M&NA / M&A at Kensett in 1930s/1940s. In 1949, he switched to MoPac RR and retired in Alicia. My grandmother, Sarah Walter, worked at defense plant in Searcy during WWII, then was cook at a restaurant in Kensett after war. Owner was Glen Shelton. I have a picture of my grandmother behind the counter with Glen and his sister Erma Dean who was a waitress there. My dad and mom graduated from Kensett High school in late 40's. He also retired from MoPac in 1980s as agent at Newport.

Jon, can you share the pictures?  They sound so interesting.  Kensett still has a lot of trains that go through.
