The SC State House in Columbia, SC  Sitting on roughly 18 acres of incredibly well manicured grounds, The South Carolina State House in Columbia, SC stares out at the city from from literally the middle of Main Street as the road dead ends into the Capitol and begins again on the other side of the building.

Constructed from blue granite with her distinct front columns and massive copper dome, the South Carolina State House stands approximately 180 feet tall and 300 feet wide. Trust me when I tell you that you can see that dome from all over downtown.

SC State House in Columbia, SC  There are guided walking tours of the inside of the State House that start about every 30 minutes and the inside is truly a sight to behold as well. As for me, I prefer the self guided tour of the grounds outside the State House. They are beautiful and currently full of color with Spring's arrival.

The History of the South Carolina State House is well worth a read as well. The Bronze stars on the side of the building, 6 of them in all, mark areas damaged by Sherman's troops firing cannons at the State House in his march on Columbia.

The SC State House in Columbia, SC  The grounds play host to several monuments who honor various individuals and groups and offer visitors an opportunity to not only see their beauty but learn about the history that they represent. It's an easy place to spend a lot of time simply exploring and the location makes in convenient to segway into the shopping and dinning of both Main Street and the Vista district of Downtown Columbia, SC. So if you are in Columbia, SC and searching for free way to get out and enjoy the outdoors and connect with some of our history, check out the SC State House and grounds right in the heart of Columbia, SC.

The SC State House and Grounds are located  at 1100 Gervais Steet Columbia, SC 29201. Or as previously mentioned, just drive down Main Street and if you don't stop, you will run into it.

Exploring the grounds is always free and the State House itself opens at 9am Monday through Friday.

For additional info on the State House, guided tours, or to plan your visit, see the website - South Carolina State House in Columbia, SC.
