It is during this time each year, that I enjoy visiting a special place in the Greater Sacramento region. That place is the Phoenix Park Vernal Pools, cradled quietly in the community of Fair Oaks. These naturally occurring pools are an ever-changing canvas each spring. During California drought years, there wasn’t much to see or explore. However, late rains this month have changed that! With the first signs of warmth and sunshine, the vernal pools have burst into life.
The pools are relatively close to my home - within 5 miles, I enjoy visiting several times each season to witness nature as artist, adding paint strokes and colors to the masterpiece.
These scenes captured in a past year demonstrate the seasonal splendor. It’s always joyful pleasure to see Egrets, Rabbits, and other wildlife, along with the vivid green landscape.
The ponds reveal microscopic sized critters and marine life like the elusive fairy shrimp, deemed to be endangered. The same holds true for the hundreds of thousands of polliwogs and tadpoles, which show up in burgeoning numbers, and grow to add song and harmony in accompaniment to the stage.
For a glimpse at what the pools have looked like in past visits, you can visit "The Elusive But Beautiful Life at California Vernal Pools" which has a slide show I created several years ago when the pools were at peak performance.
We are crazy Californians. We protect the unseen and things we don't always understand the place of in the greater plan." But, still we do - and why not!
