Recently I called Tumbleweeds Tiny Homes and spoke to a woman in the marketing department. What I thought was going to be a few quick questions turned out to be about a half hour of good information. I can’t remember the last time I had such a productive and educational conversation. Hi Shawna!
Although “tiny homes” have become a trend I was surprised to hear they have been around for about 20 years. Starting out as a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project and have now become a thriving industry. Most of us have seen these tiny homes on TV programs or at Home and Garden Shows.
A few times a week I get calls from potential buyers asking directly or indirectly if they can purchase land and place a tiny home on it. While Fremont County Colorado currently doesn’t allow them, as of March 2018, I was surprised to see that El Paso County Colorado does allow them in restricted areas. Also, there are current and pending developments around the country. Including Durango Colorado and Acony Bell, Mills River North Carolina and several in Oregon.
In my opinion, I think there is a need for major restrictions on allowing Tiny Homes in Fremont County. I know, I know Bah Humbug! But the fear of dumping, dumping and polluting the ground, polluting your own well and your neighbors well is a very real concern. Not to mention finding out somebody came, dumped on the ground, left the area all while I’m out on a hike - YUCK!
But with the growing housing crisis not to mention the Nationwide issue of homelessness I for one believe tiny homes might be one idea for a solution. In certain areas, under the right regulations and ideal circumstances, these little houses might help some people out.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
