Crape Myrtles are one of my favorite shrubs or trees.
How many times have you worked so hard to plant pretty flowers, shrubs, etc and then found out that they are not suited for your soil or you thought they were a perennial that would come back year after year and they were an annual that died at the end of the season??
Nice landscaping can add much value to your home.
We worked really hard last year to plant about 20 azaelas plants. They were gorgeous but they died! Our soil wasn't acidic enough and I could not get it where it needed to be for them to do well. It was a great disappointment.
Crape myrtles are a long standing addition to landscaping in the south and up and down both the east and west coast. Also they are simply beautiful!
These flowering trees and shrubs have been around so long and are so easy to grow. You’ll find them in zones 6 to 10 of the USDA hardiness zone map. Something that I read put that in terms that I could understand as down to -15*.
They have been growing for so long in the US that you’ll find them at old homesteads that don’t bear any resemblance to a home place any longer, just a vacant pasture or lot.
You’ll sometimes find them growing in pasture fence rows, in the edge of road ditches…
I only recently learned that they come in ALL sizes from ones that are small “houseplant size” growing in a flower pot to trees over 60 feet tall!! They grow in many different types of soils.
They are great honey bee attracters too!
You can choose between several different colors. Not only that but the bark is varigated differently on different varieties.
Some good links for information on Crape Myrtles or to order them over the internet:
The Clemson Cooperative Extension Office’s Website contains much information about the crape myrtle.
Slideshow on pruning crapemyrtles.
This site has several varieties and seemed to have good prices.
