What's Up With the Facebook Breach?

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

I'm really trying to figure out what it is I'm missing with the Facebook data breach by Cambridge Analytica story. Facebook is a free service, it doesn't collect social security numbers or credit card numbers.
And, most of my friends don't even include their birthdates or addresses in their profiles.

I'm far more concerned about the Equifax breach, which exposed especially sensitive credit history and the most important of our information. Yet, the current focus is really heavy on Facebook. In a world where you can Google your name and find all sorts of links that provide your address, age, and even any criminal history, why is there so much outrage now?. There has to be more to this story!

I've read several articles, and they simply don't seem to cover or get to the express dangers we all face because of this incident.  Someone, please enlighten me!

Myrl, I have always been careful with my settings & info on FB...I do not trust any SM sites well enough with all their supposed privacy settings anyway.

Good morning Myrl. If you worry about every breach you would never leave the house or go on line.

Good morning Myrl Jeffcoat ,

I'm so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post in her "Ah-Ha" moments for the week. I missed your post and is interesting to read all the comments. I'm so sick of all the false and misleading information and the drive to capture our minds to someone else way of thinking.

HI Myrl Jeffcoat - Great post lots of engagement!  I realize that anything I post on line is there for all to see. BUT - my concern or gripe is over the Terms of Agreement - Companies hide behind those statements when something does not go their way.  Yet we can't opt out if we want to use their service.

The breach as they call it is the trust people had that they didn't knw they usage and preferences could be used in this way. Duh? It's public and free and everyone should know they are being tracked.

This is a touchy subject with me. I tested this several times. I would "talk" to someone about a subject, like shoes, or mattresses. I made a point to say it several times in a conversation. Then low-and-behold, I started getting ads for those items on almost all my social media. Our every conversation is being taped. And things are just great... until they are not. Hmmm.

Myrl Jeffcoat. I, too, am not sure of the damages "here", but I certainly never considered my on-line anything "private". It is rather amazing how information can be manipulated for someones profit (certainly not mine!)...

Myrl Jeffcoat - I always had the same question in my mind. Checking other comments do not give a clear picture either.

Well - I can simply say, what is on Internet is 'open to all'!

Myrl Jeffcoat - it is so concerning. I wish I could just dump Facebook but as I have said in a previous comment on another blog post, in our business it is like shooting yourself in the foot. :(

I thought the point of this breach was that information was used to target certain people with "fake" news in an attempt to influence the political process (voting).

The lack of common sense on facebook should be a concern to those concernd about the breach. Why do people share so much on facebook without even giving it a second thought as to how the information could be used????

Hello Myrl and Mark Zuckerberg is in HOT WATER on millions of users private information given to sources.

I do believe this could be the start of a beginning of a end to many users at FaceBook followed by Google.

I recently dropped 2 FB accounts and am really thinking about dropping my main one? And I am also stepping by on activity at FB and posting blogs, etc with Google+ ;o(

I always look at SM as running into the mall shouting out WHERE IS THE NEAREST RESTROOM AND WONDERING WHY PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU FUNNY. Only an idiot would think some was wrong in what FB did and congress is full of idiots .
