As a former attorney I always thought "vision" was a waste of time. Not that it was bad to dream...just as long as it was billable (haha). Having transitioned from law to business coaching, I'm much more aware now of the importance of having a vision. If you start with a vision, you'll know which direction to point your ship and how you need to get to the destination. Think about it this way...if you don't know where you're going, how will you ever know if you get there? Why not take a few hours (yes, a few HOURS) and identify why you're working. Most of us in the real estate industry (sales and lending alike) are in this business because we want more time, freedom, money and control...but to what end? Capture that vision, and then you can more effectively put your business to work to achieve that vision! Otherwise, you'll be working for your business indefinitely, and where will that get you?
Here's how I set my goals. First, I found my vision...something so extraordinary that it's hard to imagine seeing it come true. But I like to reach for the stars. Then I back up from my vision to 15 years and ask "where will I have to be in 15 years to capture my vision?" Then I back up again to 10 years and ask the same question..."where will I have to be in 10 years to reach my 15 year plan?" I do this all the way back to my 90 day (quarterly) plan! Every day...yes, every day...I look at my plan and know that each of those daily tasks are a step in the direction of fulfilling my vision. Every day I know my actions have purpose. Every day I set my RAS (reticular activating system or "mental compass") in the direction I want to go. It takes effort, but it's ENJOYABLE effort...and the dividends pay off big time.
Capture your vision! Make your life what you want!
