What is the life span of a cedar shake roof in Kentlands?

Dolores and I live in the Kentlands community in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  One of the original design requirements for all of the homes was a cedar shake roof.  Most of the home buyers thought that the cedar shake roofs would have a long life.

We are seeing many of the roofs being replaced on homes that are less than twenty years old.  One of the concerns of home sellers is that the home inspector will recommend a new roof even when there has be no experience with leaks.

The replacement of a cedar shake roof is a major cost item. We plan to replace the roof on our home before we list it for sale.

Good morning, Roy. I don't think I've ever seen a cedar shake roof... and they wouldn't be a good idea in my area where termites can always be a danger.

Good morning Roy - they are certainly beautiful roofs.  I am not family with the maintenance that goes with them.

Good morning Roy. They usually have a long life, but replacement is very costly. Enjoy your day!

Roy, that does sound like it will cost you a bit to replace your roof.  Nice homes!

Roy, cedar shake roofs are beautiful but, you're right. They're expensive. Very smart to replace yours before selling your home.

Good morning, Roy Kelley I can understand the shorter life of a cedar shake....they require more maintenance....and they ARE more labor intense to apply....

I love the appearance of cedar shake, but they sure do require a lot of maintenance. Wish I could replace our shingles with the Tesla Tile roof...love the looks and the solar energy would be a wonderful addition.

Roofs are a concern for buyers when purchasing a home. Smart idea to replace yours before you decide to sell...

I like the look of cedar shake roofs, but we don't have many of them out here.  We mainly have tile and shingles and usually get somewhere between 20-30 years out of them.
