Rasheed Shabazz, local historian, will give an overview of the history and current status of Measure A on Tuesday, April 24 at 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Alameda Free Library.  The initiative prohibited construction of multi-family apartment building in Alameda and preserved many of the architecturally significant homes which were being demolished wholesale in the early 1970’s.

Opponents allege that Measure A, adopted in 1973, was racist and exclusionary. Supporters, on the other hand, claim the measure preserved Alameda’s architecture and residential heritage. What they claim was the major reason that many people were drawn to the "charming" City of Alameda.

The Alameda Free Library is located at 1550 Oak Street and is wheelchair accessible.  For more information please go to hfields@alamedaca.gov.
