You Can Share Anything in a Blog. . .But Should You?

Real Estate Agent with GreatWest Realty DRE# 00827565

As real estate professionals, we sometimes ask ourselves, or assess what is appropriate to write about and share in a blog.  I know a decade ago, in my beginning years of blogging, I pondered those questions.  Right off the bat, I realized topics of politics and religion shouldn't be part of my business plan.  From there I went on to create a mental list of things likely of interest to readers.  Obviously information about anything associated with the buying and selling of real estate topped my list.

Other topics of interest to readers associated with the buying and selling of real estate are home improvement projects, as well as refinance and mortgage information.

Because all real estate is generally local, I like including topics about events and attractions occurring in the Greater Sacramento region. Sacramento enjoys a fortunate location where we have many wonderful community amenities and attractions. There is Old Sacramento which allows a visitor to step back in time, to our raucous Gold Rush days. The California Rail Road Museum sits at one end of Old Sacramento. And, within a few blocks of this vicinity, are the State Capitol and Sutter’s Fort. There is nearly always something happening in Sacramento.

In addition to our local venues, we have within a 100 mile radius of home, San Francisco to our west, and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevadas to the east. Napa-Sonoma Wine Country is 60 miles away, and many delightful California Gold Rush towns, which dot the map surround us.

For bloggers, handy with a camera, there is the opportunity to photograph our wonders, pen a few words about them, and inform the public.

I think it can be too easy to think of our blogs as a “Dear Diary” opportunity. We probably would do better to curtail posting material which has little use to the public.  In a sad way, it likely brands us as someone who provides useless trivial information - For example our trips to the dentist to get a molar repaired - unless it’s a good recommendation for a local dentist.

Consider what future and present readers will impose as opinion about our writings when visiting what has been written.   Is there substance providing valuable information; or is it mindless dribble emanating from own desire to blather as cathartic exercise.

As a strong proponent of the First Amendment, I realize the irony while in my endeavor to nurture professional brand, I often forego much I’d otherwise like to share. However, I realize such sharing is likely inconsistent with good branding. Branding is the professional equivalent to “What will the neighbors think?”

Myrl, Overall most of my personal life stays personal and doesn't make it to my blog.  I do the occasional glimpse, and a steady reader will know that we have LOTS of pets.  That I'm an engineer.  That I was in the Navy.  That I enjoy flower gardening and taking pictures of the blooms.  And I don't object to personally dropping the periodic reference of my religion into my posts (it's part of who I am), but chances are when I do it's to promote an event like our annual Build The Walls event (a Habitat for Humanity type event, this year it's building the walls for four homes that will be trucked to Arkansas for final assembly).   I'm happy to work with anyone of any religion (or none at all if that's their choice).   If I happen to lose some business because someone doesn't want a Christian agent, I'm okay with that.  Our email signature block includes this quote (and I'm not a verbal preacher, just try to live the message):  "“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.”  ~ St. Francis of Assisi"

You speak the truth, but don't allow us to consider you are only speaking of 'the blog-osphere'.

Self-filters are critical everywhere. At the office, at the dining table, on-line.  At times, I do wish I could also have a few more filters to my own self-talk, but I'm still trying to ensure I've mastered the first three spheres.

With 20/20 hindsight, I've also noticed errors in my thinking with the passing of only a few days at times, much less months & years.

The First Amendment you support also melds with the saying "A time and a place for everything." Your branding advice here is both consistent with your principles and very powerful advice. All the best - Lynn

Hi Myrl - glad to see the feature too.  We are mindful of the fact that anyone can read what we write - and say - on social media sites. So important to use a bit of common sense. There are times when I want to share something - and then, I think about it - and poof, realize it's not in my best interest. Ha. D

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Just yesterday, Myrl, a couple came to Sacramento from San Francisco to look at homes with the sole intention of using my team because we clearly object to Trump. It is not about what we lose but more about whom we attract.

As for more sensitive subjects, well, I have discovered over 50 years of writing that as long as you make the subject amusing, interesting and entertaining, you can pretty much write about anything you damn well please.

I loved Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents comment a lot.

I do not care about branding. You can have the most elaborate website and the most polished everything, and then they come and in five minutes they see you and feel you, and God forbid you are not that polished and charismatic guy you pretended to be...

So, I do not pretend, I do not "brand"... It is me, swallow me or spit me out :)

I agree wholeheartedly with Ron and Alexandra Seigel and was going to say that I love the way that Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents writes as well - business-focused but, letting the reader know the personal side too.

I have to say that my 'money' website is all business but, here in the Rain, agents & the consumer find 'me.' All of the business articles are boring to many but, once they've read what they were in search of and are now ready to make a decison on buying or selling, they want to know the real 'you.'

It's a balancing act that keeps the reader coming back for more and keeps our passion for writing intact too! LOL There's only so much one can take of all-business post-writing! Ha!

Oh, I so agree on the political and religious discussions, Myrl! We never know who our next buyer is affiliated with - with regards to either topic and I agree with you, staying silent is not going to lead to business suicide!

Myrl Jeffcoat - Interesting how many on AR will stay pretty much in business mode, and then let it all hang out on Facebook and use it more as a diary. And, IMHO, I do let that influence my thinking about them, whether I would work with them or not. Can't help but.

Congrats on the feature  Myrl Jeffcoat .    I lived in your area while attending Sac state years ago before moving to the Bay Area.    Interesting range of comments in response to your post.  I tend to remain conservative in my blog post topics but appreciate that a few ARs mentioned they let their personalities shine and are even willing to post about some of the more taboo topics.

I'm in a place where I am comfortable stating MY opinion in my posts about God and country.  However I am careful not to step on the opinions of others.  A past client who is one of my best friends and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of things, but we have mutal respect for each others opinions and like Bill if I happen to miss out on a client because they know my religion I am totally okay with that. If I happy to miss out on a client because I support law enforcement publically then I'm okay with that too.  And in a local election I have a sign for a candidate right in front of my office.  I'm okay with that too.
