National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

April 30th is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day. It really is the perfect day to adopt a shelter pet in the Charlotte, North Carolina metro area (or anywhere else for that matter). Although, I could argue that any day of the year is a perfect day to adopt a shelter pet. Millions of homeless dogs and cats are housed in shelters in the Charlotte metro area, as well as all around the country, all hoping for a loving, fur-ever home.

When You Adopt A Shelter Pet You Are Saving A Life!

It's estimated that 2.5+ million dogs and cats are adopted annually from shelters in the USA. Most regrettably, that's on top of some 3 million that are euthanized each year! When you adopt a shelter pet, you are saving a life.

Save a life and adopt a dog or cat on national adopt a shelter pet day

There are estimates that there may be as many as 70 million stray cats out there! Here are a few more statistics:

  •  20-30% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescue organizations.

  • Five out of 10 dogs in shelters and seven out of 10 cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.

Adopting A Pet Is Good For Your Health:

Did you know that adopting a pet is good for your health?  Pets (especially dogs) help us maintain a more active lifestyle. And, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pet ownership has been shown to help lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and feelings of loneliness. It seems like a "no brainer" to adopt a dog or cat.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS, ~ hi Paul.. as you may know, I make a monthly trip to my shelter to deliver supplies... nothing puts a bigger smile on my face that seeing people leave the shelter with their new dog or cat. Everyone is smiling, including the dogs and cats.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 ~ hi Sheila and Larry... when a pet goes home from a shelter, it's not just the pet who's excited... the new parents are as well. I've never forgotten those days when I brought one of my fur babies home.

Lottie Kendall ~ hi Lottie... this day is all about creating more awareness for the need for adoptions... and you're right... if even one dog or cat is adopted today because of my post, my job might not be done, but I'll be happy!

Did I just hear a few minutes ago that SF has a mini-earthquake? Trust that all is well at your end.

Barbara Todaro ~ absolutely, Barbara.... that, in fact, is one of the reasons there are homeless dogs and cats in shelters... people obtained them and then couldn't take care of them properly.

Nina-it's good to know that many more people are adopting their pets from shelters. I wish they would put tighter rules on who can have a pet!!!

I know our human society has very strict rules...sometimes tooo strict that have kept deserving pet parents from adopting pets.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson ~ hi Sally... our local Humane Society is pretty stringent, as well. Of course, it's hard to judge from the outside looking in if the rules are too strict or not.

Nina, I had no idea it was Adopt a Shelter Pet day... wish I knew it earlier, now having had two dogs from a rescue....and not counting all our cats one from the Vet's Office, and two off the street the rest were all  rescue cats... there is no reason to "buy" a pet when so many need a loving home...Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. ~ good morning, Endre... my mantra as well "adopt don't shop." At the end of day, as far as I'm concerned any day is a good day to adopt a shelter pet! And you've certainly done your bit.

Lise Howe I so agree, Lise. After we had to put our Oliver to sleep about two weeks ago, the first place I went to was my shelter to find a new cat to give a home to. The stories about how some of those cats ended up in the shelter are heart-breaking. I'd take them all home with me if I could!
