You know your credit report is important, but other companies also collect information on you, and you have a right to see those reports. You should check your credit reports at least once a year to make sure there are no errors that could keep you from getting credit or the best available terms on a loan.
Once you request your credit reports, it's important to know what kind of information you should be on the lookout for as you review them. When reviewing your credit report, check that it contains only items about you. Be sure to look for information that is inaccurate or incomplete. If you do find anything inaccurate, or an error, you have to dispute it. Once you dispute it the credit agencies must respond within 30 days.
You are entitled to a free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major consumer reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). You can look at one every 4 months or all at once.
