Sarah Elisabeth

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty AR LLC PB00068179

Sarah Elisabeth was born in Toledo, Ohio back in 1855 to Oliver and Harriet. After the Civil War the family moved to Chicago where she met and married Archibald. She died in 1905 at 50 however, the cause of her death to this day remains a mystery. What I can tell you of course is the rest of the story.

She was also an inventor because Archibald was a stair builder and an upholsterer. It is not known when but she opened a furniture store in the Chicago area.   She invented a folding cabinet bed the forerunner of the Murphy bed receiving a patent for it in 1885.

What you may not know about Sarah Elisabeth (yes that is the correct spelling) Goode is that she was the first African-American woman to receive a United States patent. Until tomorrow keep those pearly whites showing

How cool is that, James! And yes, I know that Elisabeth is spelled corrected because that is how our daughter's name is spelled. She was named after her grandmother whose name was spelled with an s and not a z as was typical in Holland.

Hi James Dray I always wonder how inventors like Sarah come up with the lightbulb information to create an invention.

James- I have to admire anyone who is an inventor!  I actually saw a huge paneled den in a home a few years ago and it had two murphy beds in it.

I would be interested to see a picture of Sarah Elisabeth Goode's 'cabinet bed.'  Believe it would still be useful today...
