The Salt Lick ~ "Foodie" Friday 4/20/18

Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker United Realtors® ~ 512.750.6899

One of my favorite places with family is with this iconic place I'm sharing with you today. Many a birthday parties have been held here through the years in our family. Its about a 45 minute trek from NW Austin but worth the time spent reminiscing of past get-togethers.  BBQ is a major food group in Texas and here in Central Austin, this is where you'll find some of the best!

The Salt Lick originated about 1967 when the Roberts family decided to clear an area on the Roberts family land in Driftwood, TX and build a BBQ pit.  He would start cooking on a Thursday night, sleep on a cot next to the pit and then sell the meat until it was gone.

Those family recipes are the basis for what they cook today. They seat over 800 people and on an average Saturday they feed around 2000 people and now also have a second location in nearby Round Rock, TX. What makes them so successful is they do not use tomatoes in their barbecue sauce, so it doesn't burn or taste bitter.  They finish cooking their meats over an open fire that is fed with live oak wood that is the most solid and heavy oak wood. Briskets are cooked 20-24 hours and pork ribs & sausages about 3 hours with lots of basting along the way.

A sampling of what is available at the Salt Lick: Family style all you can eat beef brisket, pork ribs, sausage, potato salad, cole slaw and beans... You can also get individual plates of your favorite meat alone or as a combo.  Feel like a sandwich? They are also available: sliced or chopped beef, pulled pork, sausage, turkey and Marino's triple chop with chopped brisket, sausage & ribs with pickles and onions. Top it all off with a great BBQ dessert - a slice of homemade pecan pie or chocolate pecan pie, blackberry or peach cobbler and, of course, a scoop of ice cream on top!

Hi Dorie

I always enjoy your foodie picks, and Austin sure is laden with great places. The Salt Lick sounds terrific, even though it’s just past breakfast time for me...and I just spend 2.5 hours on the freeway!!

Happy Friday - have a great weekend.
