Earth Day 2018 celebrated - big spring garden ready to plant

We celebrated Earth Day weekend by getting a new spring garden tilled up and ready to plant. My dear husband goes all out once a year and gives it a deep digging with his backhoe bucket to get rid of roots. I jump in and remove most of the grass roots, tree roots and other debris.  After adding supplements like compost and lime, he'll roto-till it all up thoroughly to make it light and lovely and rich. Ready to plant a spring garden!

This year while digging we also harvested the sweet potatoes which sort of took over naturally from some volunteer sprouts.  I've got a huge supply of sweet potatoes now which should store well for a few months, and the baby ones left in the ground will seed the next crop.

The seed starter bench is already loaded with young plants ready for the ground: bok choy; mesclun greens; butter lettuce; spring onions; basil; cilantro; cherry tomatoes; zinnias. Many more seeds will go straight into the warm ground. No worries about frost here in Hawaii - we can grow all year round. It's the rain and short days of winter that keep me from planting in the winter months, but we still manage to harvest something to eat all through the year.

Keep it coming.  We've learned to not plant too many vegetables at one time, and instead will plant smaller amounts every few weeks to ensure a continuous supply of organic veggies and herbs. It's so satisfying to know your food is safe and healthy and fresh, and it won't be recalled!
This garden and another of similar size keep us pretty busy during the growing season.  After years of supplementing this patch of ground it's rewarding us with more good food than we can ever use so our friends and neighbors benefit too. Our little cows and chickens appreciate the excess and trimmings that get tossed their way, and we appreciate what they provide us in the way of protein.

As you can see, we love our country lifestyle on Maui's north shore - it makes us healthy and strong.  I wouldn't trade this for anything.
