Lost another friend today…
Far too many friends passing this year, life is short, best to live it while you can.
John was a good guy trapped in an impossible situation, mostly of his own making.
Though he had the resources to live as a wealthy man and take care of himself, that frugal depression mentality seemed to have ahold of him, keeping him from spending his money on decent food, shelter, and medical care.
John’s house was unlivable, so he spent most of his time living in his van that was so full that he could not recline the seat, and occasionally he accepted a bed at our local homeless shelters.
His days were spent on the couch at Franciscans Downtown, except when he would get angry at someone for trying to help him and stormed out for a day or so.
Fortunately, in a world that little compassion or understanding for someone like John, he did always find welcoming people at Franciscans Downtown where he could rest, visit, enjoy refreshments, and the ministry of presence that is given freely there.
In the last few years of his life, though he was seldom comfortable or healthy, he did know that people cared about him.
And today he did have Fr. Placid and several others who cared for him and prayed for him by his side as the doctor took the respirator off of him, he had a short time to laugh at a few jokes and express a few final wishes including his funeral at St Petes.
Then he passed on with a smile on his face knowing that he was loved.
Rest in Peace old friend, you will be missed.
And the rest of you, take care of yourselves.
