Located just off Main Street Winnsboro, a short drive from Columbia, SC, is the campus of Mt. Zion. It's just over three acres in total with a large field and the brick building itself standing on one end. The lands were donated after the formation of Mt. Zion College in 1777 and was continuously overseen by the Mt. Zion Society which is still in existence today.
The campus served as an encampment during both the Revolutionary War and the war between the states. In fact Mt. Zion and William and Mary are the only 2 remaining campuses in the U.S. to serve as encampments for opposing forces during these wars. To put it lightly, there is a lot of history here.
Mt. Zion also served as a high school and up until 1991, the campus was used as Mt. Zion Elementary School, which believe it or not is where I attended the 4th and 5th grade. Though you can no longer wander the halls of remaining buildings, you can enjoy the grounds and get a good look at the outside.
There is walking trail around the main field in front of the building and there are several monuments that grace the grounds, including monument to honor sports teams from the school and one honoring William Belk, a Winnsboro native who was an Iranian hostage released in 1981.
Mt. Zion is located at 250 N. Zion Street Winnsboro, SC 29180.
Visit the Friends of Mt. Zion Institute website for more info about the grounds and history. Mt. Zion in Winnsboro, SC.
