Hymen Lipman was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He emigrated to the United States arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania around 1829. That’s about all I can tell you except for or course the rest of the story. Around 1840, he became the leading stationer in the Philadelphia area.
In 1843, he opened the first U.S. envelope company in Philadelphia. He died in 1893 at 76. What you may not know about Hymen is that in 1858 he received a patent (U.S. Patent 19,783). That patent was for his invention of the first pencil with an attached eraser. Until tomorrow keep a smile on your face and a penny in your pocket.
