Spread a little sunshine. You never know who needs it.

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Cornerstone Business Group Inc 0225086119

I had two interactions today that reminded me how important it is to be the sunshine with the people you interact with. You never know where a person is in his/her life, and a little act of kindness can be like a gift.

I stopped by a convenience store on the way to the health department for a septic system report. There is a young lady there that I think is one of the nicest people I've ever met. A few months ago I told her how impressed I had been by her and she thanked me and today she beams whenever I show up. Shortly after that exchange a new employee joined the staff.

She had a very flat affect. Some may interpret it as unfriendly, but I wasn't buying it. After she had been there for a few weeks, I struck up a conversation with her starting with a compliment. She looked up at me, smiled and thanked me. She talks to me every time I drop by now. I'm always greeted with a smile and a cheerful comment. She has the most beautiful smile. It's nice to see it often.

I left that store on the way to the health department. I called them on the way, and they were a little rude and not terribly helpful. When I got there, I greeted the staff and made my request. I joked with the staff member who was working on my file and she disappeared into the file room. Upon her return, she was smiling and came out to the waiting room and said, "Let's sit down here together and go over this file."

We sat together and went over the file for about 20 minutes, joking along the way. Her co-worker joined in the conversation and before it was over we were all joking and sharing stories. Their approach to me was reflected in my approach to them. I wanted to see if I could bring a little positive sunshine to their day and it seems that I did. They ended up helpful, friendly and easy to work with. Take a minute and share a little sunshine. Somebody needs it.

Good thoughts about sharing the love, Mike.  I often wonder what the world would be like if every person simply committed to giving a kind word to two people each day.  In this presently contentious era we dwell in, it could make a whole lot of difference.

Hi Mike- totally agree with you about this!  We can't possibly know what someone else is experiencing in their life or even at that moment. If we can start with a smile, 9 times out of 10, you'll get it returned to you.

Years ago my husband and I were managing a small town grocery store. At that time the senior center provided free meals for seniors 2 days per week and the cook did the grocery shopping for those meals. She had some specific demands - such as the cuts of meat being all the same size. She also could buy tax-free and sometimes she wanted discounts on case lots of certain things.

Apparently those things had been a hassle for her at the other store in this small town, so she had a huge chip on her shoulder. In short, she was nasty, rude, and altogether unpleasant. The checkers would watch when she came in the store and try to go on break when she neared the checkstand.

One day one of those checkers decided to end it. She resolved to turn that woman into a friend. She started making sure she was the one to check out her groceries.

It didn't take long for her to succeed, and that lady turned into one of our greatest champions. She told everyone to shop with us. It was a sad day when she and her husband moved out of town - and all of us at the store chipped in to buy her a going away present.

This is a great reminder, Mike Cooper. Being pleasant seems to be a break in others' days and in turn they usually makes my day better, too. Please and thank you go a long way as well.

Thanks for sharing,

Every day we are faced with choices. We can choose to be negative or choose to be positive. Either way we will infect those we encounter.

Thanks for letting your light shine.

Your positive attitude can rub off on others and sets the tone.  I'm even pleasant to those who try to sell me crap on the phone--I know they are just doing a job.

Absolutely! If we approach people with a smile and positive attitude, many times they will come around to a happier state. Yes, we sometimes meet grouches and it doesn't matter how friendly you can be, some people will remain unchanged. But spreading a little happiness can go a long way in our relationships and daily interactions.

I am a sucker for positivity.  Great post Mike.  In these situations, had you chosen negativity, I bet the end result would have been different and this post may have been a rant.  Kudos to you for making the choice to be nice. P.S. I love the disclaimer.

It's been a few years back, but a former agent and her husband moved to another state from my market.  They came back for a funeral service after a couple of years aways and Charlie (the husband of the couple) said something that truly stuck with me. He said Georgia people were the most friendly, that strangers wave and smile everywhere in Georgia. The fact he felt that has made me way more conscious about "spreading sunshine" as you put it.

Very true. There is too much conflict and indifference in the world these days. It only takes a smile and someone actually caring to brighten someone's day. Thank you for sharing.
