"Always invest for the long term."
In August of 2015, I published the following blog post. Although the numbers will be slightly different, the ultimate result is still the same.
* * * * *
When you're cruising real estate and general investment sites, everyone has an opinion about what is the very best investment.
Not surprising, most of the time, it is directly related to whatever the author is selling.
Today, I'm going to reveal what is actually the best investment ever... and I won't try to sell you anything. I promise.
I ran across the following general statistics on average Return On Investments (ROI) over the last several years:
S&P 500: 1.65%
Dow Jones Industrial: 29.49%
Real Estate: -19.47
U.S. Treasury: 16.36%!
So, what is the best investment? None of the above. Over any given period, any one of the above investments could look good or bad, depending on the specific time period.
The ONE long term investment that ALWAYS pays big dividends is the same today as it has always been. It is an investment in... YOU!
You will never, ever, find anything to invest in that will give you a greater return on your investment than investing in yourself... in your health, your education, and your personal development. No matter what happens, an investment in yourself can never be taken away. Oh, yes, I admit our health can fail us but without taking care of your health, you will surely suffer the consequences. And, any investment in your education and personal development can never be taken away. It's an asset that can never be stolen or lost.
Benjamin Franklin said it best:
“If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
The return on an investment in yourself is estimated to be at 3,000%. Yes, that is a 30-1 ROI. I don't know of any other investment that can ever come close to matching that. Let me repeat that:
One of my favorite speakers of all time is the late, great, Jim Rohn. He said: “Income seldom exceeds personal development.” Other than the occasional lottery winner, or heir to a fortune, I would venture to guess the word "seldom" could be replaced with "never".
More words of wisdom from Jim Rohn:
“If you want to have more, you have to become more."
"For things to change, you have to change."
"For things to get better, you have to become better.”
“If you improve, everything will improve for you."
"If you grow, your money will grow; your relationships, your health, your business and every external effect will mirror that growth in equal correlation.”
As you are evaluating a potential investment in yourself, do not ask what it "costs". Rather, ask what it is "worth". What is the potential ROI on your health, wealth and happiness? You should never regret money spent on your education and personal development.
YOU... are the very best investment ever!
