One of the things I absolutely LOVE about living here on the Kitsap Peninsula in WA State, is being part of a very large military community. We are honored to have several strategic base installations here in the Western Puget Sound - Bangor Sub Base, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport, and others.
As a Veteran and former Navy submarine sailor, I'm an avid supporter of our active-duty service members and their devoted families. I'm a sucker for those YouTube videos that show Moms and Dads surprising their kids by coming home unexpectedly!
This morning, while I was out watering some newly planted flowers on our patio, I heard 'Reveille' being played over on Bangor Sub Base. Now, we live over in Poulsbo, across the waters of Liberty Bay, but you can still hear 'Reveille' being played over the loudspeakers on the base many miles away.
I remember back when I served in the Navy, whenever 'Reveille' or 'Taps' was played on base, you were required to stop whatever you were doing, stand at attention, face the nearest flag, and salute, until the music stopped.
Okay, so call me a patriotic sap, but there I was, standing at attention, hand over my heart, thankful to be living in such an amazing Country, and surrounded by so many, who give so much, so we can enjoy it.
Be sure the next time you see a military service member, and thank them for their service!
