Anxiety Prior To A Listing Presentation | Waiting In The Wings

Professional athletes admit that even after having won numerous awards for their stellar performances in their respective sports, they have moments of anxiety just prior to every event. There are professional athletes who become so anxious about their future competition that they vomit before performing.

It’s difficult to compare our profession with athletes who compete on the worldwide arena, but for many real estate agents, there is a feeling of anxiousness that attacks them just before an appointment.  They may not be confident with their presentation; or it could be their strong need to win every competition or challenge.

Fear of that future event is a feeling that many real estate agents experience.  It’s very common with newly licensed agents, but it’s certainly not exclusive to them.  Seasoned agents feel anxious also.  I can remember that feeling prior to every appointment, and the degree of intensity varied depending on the importance and/or magnitude of that listing.

Of course, once the front door opened and I entered the home, the feeling of anxiousness disappeared, and it was show time.  Nothing neutralizes that anxious feeling better than the door opening (the curtain rising) and the appointment (performance) beginning.  I think the next line should be “break a leg!!”  Not!!!

Just another thought for the moment….

I've been licensed since 1981, and I have always had a little of that listing presentation anxiety.  And, like you, the moment the door opened, it would subside.

I think that's a normal feeling... there's always a certain degree of anxiety no matter how heavy a producer one might be.... as I said, professional athletes have anxiety... Myrl Jeffcoat

When it is showtime, the butterflies are gone.  We simply have no time to think about them once we engage with the potential sellers.

Morning Barbara.

I can vividly remember my first solo listing appointment.  While it went well, my nerves were off the scale

Good morning Barbara.  Anxiety is a good thing.  When we lose it, it means we no longer care enough and probably won't be at our best.

yes, that's exactly how I interpret that feeling.... even after decades of listing property, I never assumed the listing was mine!! I gave a presentation as if it was my first time meeting the homeowner...and often it was the third or fourth!!!

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

So funny that you mention that today, Barbara! I am meeting a relocation buyer this morning, referred to me by a past client here in Charlotte. I am confident it will go smoothly but, still, a bit anxious pre-meeting. I'm sure as soon as they walk into the office, I'll be back to normal!

I used to get that feeling every morning before I went on the air in radio, now I get the jitters before each meeting with a new client - buyer or seller. But, as others mention, it goes away once we are face-to-face. Bernie is the cool cucumber... ha.
