When people first move to a state with mountains, mountain driving can be scary! People who learned to drive in flatter states never learned about mountain driving. Here are a few pointers.
Driving Down A Mountain
Smart mountain motorists don't usually drive down a mountain road any faster than they can drive up it. When headed downhill, don't just brake to slow your speed in the mountains. Just downshift to 2 or L. Some motorists from flatter states never even use the automatic transmission to shift into low gear, but when mountain driving, it can be a necessity! When driving down a mountain, try to only use your brake to slow while you are actually shifting down into a lower gear. Zooming down a a mountain might seem like fun, but it's not the safest mountain driving habit. Riding your brakes down the mountain can cause them to overheat and fail.
Driving Up A Mountain
Does that mean that when you drive up a mountain, you try to shift to a higher gear? Well, no. When you're driving uphill, you shift to a lower gear for another reason. When driving up a mountain, you shift to a lower gear to make it easier for the engine to get enough power for the incline. It can help prevent overheating.
Driving Up A Very Steep Mountain
If it's really a steep incline, you can help your car out by turning off your air conditioning and roll your windows down temporarily. See, the air conditioning can really add to the strain on your engine. Normally, it's no big deal, but it take a lot of power to drive up a very steep mountain!
