Want a Fashion Tip for Staging Your House?

Home Stager with Room Service Home Staging

Want a fashion tip for staging your house?

In my fashion-focused youth, a rule of thumb was that when you stood in front of the mirror and something screamed back at you, you needed to staging tipsremove it. It might have been that large necklace you added at the last minute or the color of the shoes you chose.

How something looks when we first see it can leave a lasting impression on us.  It’s why we always take that final peek in the mirror before we go out the door, especially if it’s to an event or dinner out.

When you are readying your house to sell, keep this in mind.  As a Home Stager, I’ve seen rooms where the seller needed to take a step back and take a good “look in the mirror!”

Some examples …

~If a little floral arrangement would add to a table, why not go all the way

home staging don't

~Filling the wall with photos

too many photos

~Making sure that every inch of space has a chair in it

too much furniture

~Taking “adding a pop of color” too far

too much color

These are just a few examples.

Take a look at what you see when you’re standing in the doorway of a room.  Make sure that’s what you want your buyers to see!

I've had sellers doubt my advice until they have put into action, and then walked into their home seeing it the way it is staged.  "Why didn't I do this ages ago?"  It may not be the obvious way to live in a home, but it sure is pleasing to the eye.

Kathy, we are in the midst of selling one of our properties...I appreciate the message in this post and heard it loud and clear:

Take a look at what you see when you’re standing in the doorway of a room.  Make sure that’s what you want your buyers to see!

It's hard for people to really be objective about their own choices in decor, but that's one more reason to bring in a professional that knows what they are doing.

Great explanation. We've had clients very surprised at the difference my wife makes when she's done staging.  It makes a difference.

Gosh, I wish I had you or Sharon here to help me!  Not staging to sell  - just to live :)  Rebuilt after a fire and pretty good on architectural aspects but still missing on some design - Nothing screaming except Master Bedroom-  its screaming "I'm empty!".  Great post - thank you!

Many sellers have distorted mirrors, so can't see the reality of the rooms in their homes.  Additionally, they also fail to implement the ideas and advice from their Realtor and often can't comprehend why offers to buy are substantially below their asking price. Great post.

Hi Kathy

I think it can be difficult for many sellers to be objective, or to look at their homes through the eyes of a buyer. Your examples help a ton! I find that taking pictures for sellers to look at on their computer can provide a helpful perspective and things looks different that way.

Kathy, great examples to illustrate your point.

If we can get the seller to look with buyers eyes and not their own, they can see what may not work.

I love your sharing.
