Local artists, musicians, chefs, Veterans, students, and galleries will all be celebrated Memorial Day weekend when the 6th Annual Rock The Cape Festival returns to Hatteras Island.

Rock The Cape’s featured event, A Taste of Hatteras, will be held on Monday, May 28 from 5pm-10pm at The Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton. A Taste of Hatteras will have chefs from Café Pamlico, Ketch 55, Hatteras Bowls, The Frisco Sandwich Company, Good Winds Restaurant, Quarter Deck and Cake Hatteras showcasing their culinary skills and serving up a variety of their most popular tasting options. The Joey Harkum Band from Maryland, Virginia Beach based reggae band SoPoz, Hatteras musician Steve Vang and Hatteras Island band Blurky’s Quirky Friends will be playing live music throughout A Taste of Hatteras.

“Rock The Cape is an amazing community event for the arts and Cape Hatteras,” said Barry Wells, the Skipper of Blurky’s Quirky Friends. “We were part of the first Rock The Cape in 2012 and it has been awesome watching the event evolve over the last few years. Blurky’s Quirky Friends has also evolved adding a percussionist and Jack Frost on the fiddle. We are honored to be representing Hatteras Island and to be a part of this fun event.”

Tickets to A Taste of Hatteras are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. They can be purchased at RockTheCapeOBX.com, The Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton and Dare County Arts Council in Manteo.

The annual Rock The Cape Island Art Show will also be held on Monday, May 28 from 10am-4pm. Over 25 artisans will gather at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center for the art show. Visitors will be able to enjoy live art demonstrations as well as live music while checking out local arts and crafts. Admission to the art show is free.

Saturday, May 26 will feature two additional Rock The Cape events for children and Veterans.

Studio 12 in Avon will host a free Youth Art Event from 1pm-3pm on Saturday, May 26. The event will feature works on display from local Cape Hatteras Elementary School students as well as fun art activities.

“There will be an interactive children’s art project at Studio 12 provided by Cape Hatteras Elementary School that encourages children to promote positive, friendly behavior and rid out bullying,” said Cape Hatteras Elementary School art teacher Kevin Biddle. “Children will also have the opportunity to create a Rock The Cape project to take home. Come out and support the arts!”

A Wounded Warrior barbecue fundraiser supporting the Cape Hatteras Wounded Warriors Fund will be held May 26, starting at 10am at Indian Town Center in Frisco. The dinner, at $9 per plate, features barbecue, beans, slaw, a roll, and a beverage. The dinner is available for take-out only.

“This barbecue fundraiser is a wonderful event that has been going on for seven years now,” said Hatteras Island author Kevin McCabe. “Hundreds of folks have supported our cause and said it is the best barbecue plate they have ever had. Come see for yourself!”

Festivalgoers are encouraged to shop the local art galleries on Hatteras Island while traveling from one Rock The Cape event to the next.

Rock the Cape was started in 2012 by Dare County Arts Council as an initiative to promote and celebrate the artistic community on Hatteras Island.
