Maui is still safe from the volcano on the Big Island
The volcanic activity on the Big Island right now is very dramatic and it makes for some compelling news coverage. It's a real disaster for those who are living near the flows, or downwind of the fumes. Many families are displaced and will never be able to return. My heart goes out to them. The eruption is still evolving and it seems to get worse every day.
But on Maui we don't have any direct effects since the lava is very far away. We can't see the red hot flows, and for the most part the smoke and ash blows away in the opposite direction. It's pretty much "business as usual" over on the Valley Isle (Maui) with the trade winds blowing in clean air from the north east, and visitors arriving every day to enjoy all the beauty that Maui has to offer.
Concerned friends and family keep asking about whether or not we're OK on Maui and, YES we're OK - thanks for asking! In the picture below you can see the sandy beach along the North Kihei shoreline. In the background is a small old cinder cone that hasn't erupted in hundreds of years. When the bad air does blow over to Maui, this part of the island will know it first.
