I was lucky enough to attend the National Association of Realtors convention in Washington DC this past week and was so saddened by what the mainland thinks is happening here on the Big Island.
Time after time, people seen my badge, and thought I had been evacuated off the island, and that is so far from reality!!! STOP WATCHING THE MEDIA - PLEASE
I just want to tell all..... , actually before that, I do want to say it is a tragic event for the residents that have lost thier homes or who were evacuated in the lava flow area, I do not want to defer from their very real losses.
But I do want to clarify, the Big Isand is over 4,000 square miles in size, and the area affected my the Volcano.... about 10 square miles, has been designated as an extreme lava hazard zone 44 years ago (probably before any of these homes were built in its path) .
So please, let’s not make a secondary tragic event by misinforming the public on what is truly happening here.
Right now, we are getting about a 50% cancellation on vacation rentals, that’s about 90% of our business - tourism.
The Norwegian Cruise lines, decided to cancel its Big Island ports for now, why…. Because they are watching the media from offices in Norway (guessing-lol).
WE ARE OPEN FOR BUISINESS – there, I shouted it out! WE ARE OPEN FOR BUISINESS !
I want you to look at the little red strip, bottom right of the map, this is the area where lava is. It is a known lava flow area, and this eruption has been going on for 35 years now, it is of no surprise to anyone.
