With an environmentally conscious city like Santa Cruz our community leaders are continually thinking about and implementing new and creative ways that the city can become more eco-friendly. “Go Santa Cruz” was started in an effort to reduce vehicular emissions and combat climate change at the local level. With these, and other efforts, Santa Cruz is becoming a national leader in reducing single-occupant car trips by promoting and supporting alternative means of transportation. And that effort has only continued to grow.
The city of Santa Cruz newest initiative is the introduction of a bike-share program with the help of Jump Bike. Now 250 bright red smart-bikes will be available for rent around the city at just $2 per 30 minute ride. By using the app, or Jump Bike’s website, customers can locate and rent bikes in their area.Stations are being set up around Santa Cruz where the bikes can be picked up or dropped off for the next user. They come fully equipped with U-locks and a GPS tracker that makes them virtually theft-proof.
With the bike share program those that do not have free access to a bike can now enjoy a ride. Similarly this allows for those who were concerned with bike theft to enjoy a ride with their mind at ease. This is only one of the efforts through the Go Santa Cruz initiative, there is expected for more to come. Jump Bike is just one example of the innovative programs the City of Santa Cruz is engaged in to make our community more bike friendly and provide alternatives to traditional transportation models.
