Memorial Day, National Cemetery, Presidio of San Francisco

Memorial Day weekend, and time once again to share this poignant poem which is engraved on a plaque above the National Cemetery in San Francisco's Presidio:

The Young Dead Soldiers, by Archibald MacLeish

The young dead soldiers to not speak.

Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:

who has not heard them?

They have a silence that speaks for them at night

and when the clock counts.

They say: We were young. We have died.

Remember us.

They say: We have done what we could

but until it is finished it is not done.

They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished

no one can know what our lives gave.

They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours,

they will mean what you make them.

They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for

peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,

it is you who must say this.

We leave you our deaths. Given them their meaning.

We were young, they say. We have died; remember us.

Lottie,  for some unexplainable reason (other than all the Facebook posts) I was overwhelmed with sadness this morning. Not only did so many make the ultimate sacrifice, those they left behind did too.

Hi Kathleen Daniels - remembering and honoring without being depressed is a trick, but it's one I think those who died would like us to master. It's almost a duty for those of us here to strive for happiness while being grateful.

I'll give you a call this week.

That view in the photo is a testament to the cost freedom demands.  Very sobering!  Memorial Day is far more than a day off and a barbeque!

Hi Lottie,
A poignant message:

They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours,

they will mean what you make them.

They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for

peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,

it is you who must say this.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - have you visited the Presidio here and walked by the National Cemetery? It IS sobering; the poem definitely makes one think.

Hello Carol Williams - those stanzas give me chills and I contemplate how we're doing on making strides toward peace and a new hope. This was written about those who lost their lives in the first World War.

Lottie Kendall - Thank you for sharing this poem. The willingness to sacrifice for our country is something many do and it overwhelms me that we as people who live in a free country, can't do more to honor them.

Good morning, Gita Bantwal - it's a very moving poem, isn't it?

Patricia Feager - My take from this beautiful poem is the admonition that we need to do out utmost to ensure that peace prevails--that is the way to best honor their sacrifice.

Hello Brian England - I'm glad that poem spoke to you--it does to me. We're skipping the Memorial Day events in the Presidio this year, choosing to celebrate my husband's birthday with the family instead. It will be a great day. Hope yours is, too.

Good morning, Sybil Campbell and Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents - I agree that the poem is very touching. I think there is a lesson there, a challenge to us to do what we can to make their deaths meaningful.

Hi Maria Sapio - it's up to us to give their lives and deaths meaning, right? The way we live and the actions we take can do that.

Hello Grant Schneider and George Souto - I'm glad I posted this poem again this year. It never grows old; the meaning is as fresh and important as it was the first time I read it. I hope you both had a wonderful, meaningful day today.
