Consider Protecting Mono Lake as a Charitable Donation

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate BRE #00697006

My brokerage, in an attempt to appear more human and caring, I imagine, started setting up the Lyon Cares program, which donates funds to charities, right after a company-wide fiasco happened that threatened our very framework. I'm not saying it's not a good program, or that even under the auspiciousness of how it was founded lessens its credibility, it still deserves our support. Doesn't matter how a person or company comes to share the wealth with others, in my mind, as long as they do.

As an office, we can nominate charities and hope our choices garner enough votes that the company will choose that charity. Well, I know no matter what I have to say about preserving Mono Lake, it's not a popular charity for most of the people in my office. Starting with the fact it is not "local." So I thought I would just put it out there for anybody else who is interested in conservation.

You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Support for the Mono Lake Committee is Necessary and Appreciated.

Hi Liz this really caught my attention. The second I saw the tufa I knew what it was and wondered why it was exposed. Now I know. Do you have any idea why it is called "Mono" lake? I suppose because it is in Mono County but just curious as mono in spanish is monkey and I have never seen monkeys roaming in that part of California-haha.

I've always thought Mono Lake to be a fascinating landscape.  In response to Marco's #1 comment.  "Mono" lake didn't get it's name from the Spanish in this instance, but from the Northern Paiute Indians instead.  Here's what Quora says:

Marco Giancola I think it's named Mono Lake because it's in Mono County.

And Myrl Jeffcoat is right, Native Americans did not call it Mono Lake. They called it something else.

Elizabeth, interesting that a charity would be chosen that is not local.   Hope many contribute to this charity.

Joan Cox You might need a bit more coffee this morning because this is NOT a Lyon charity as Lyon only supports local. This is not local. I think you missed that part. (Which is why I did not suggest Mono Lake to Lyon and elected to do my own blog about it.)
