Daytona Beach Florida - Tropical Plants - Bird of Paradise

A very popular exotic tropical plant grown in the Daytona Beach area, is the bird of paradise plant.  This is one plant that can tolerate the salt breeze so it can be grown near the ocean.  This photograph was taken at the residence 2206 S. Peninsula Drive, in Daytona Beach which is located on the peninsula, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River. The Bird of Paradse is also known as a crane flower and is a native of South Africa.  The botanical name is Strelitzia Reginae.Daytona Beach Bird of Paradise Tropical Plants

"The bird of paradise plant requires full sun, but it will tolerate lightly shaded positions if kept warm, though its flowering may be diminished. The plant does best when grown in rich, loamy soil with good drainage. The bird of paradise can also be grown near the ocean in seaside gardens, as the leathery leaves withstand the salt breeze."

Good morning Joyce.  I didn't know they were native to South Africa.  I had always thought they came from some tropical islands.
