I didn’t want this blog to be just a collection of oldies from the 60's, because there is great music written in every generation and every genre. Today I chose to grab a song from the Blues arena.
There is a personal story behind this song. Back in 2000 my wife and I were vacationing on Maui with some friends and we noticed that B.B. King was going to be performing in Kahului. On a lark, we decided to see if we could get last minute tickets. We showed up at the box office and to our surprise, there were good seats still available. The venue was an outdoor arena. Now just imagine if you will, a gorgeous night under the stars in Hawaii, the smell of tropical flowers in the air and B.B. King up on stage not more than 50 feet away. It was a magical experience. From that day forward I was a huge B.B. King fan.
The song I chose today is one of B.B,’s most popular. The Thrill is Gone is a signature cut. But the version that I chose is from the album Deuces Wild. Deuces Wild, released in 1997, is a compilation of duets with a variety of superstar performers from Dione Warwick to Willie Nelson. This one is with Tracy Chapman who at the time was still an up and coming blues singer that has now gone on to her own stellar career.
Over time it has become one of my favorite albums.
