Visiting Arizona this year? Here is some Western Lore to tell the family while driving to the Grand Canyon.

Where did the cowboy term "Ten Gallon Hat" come from? Hint: The American western cowboys and Mexican vaqueros spoke different languages but borrowed and changed common words used on the range.

Remember Hoss Cartwright on the old western TV show Bonanza? He always had that giant Ten Gallon Hat or something close to it.

A ten-gallon hat holds only three quarts.

"The term "galón" actually refers to a certain kind of braided hatband that was popular among Mexican vaqueros. The "10 galón hat" would indicate a hat with a tall enough crown to display 10 of these braided ribbons. It is said that this is one big linguistic mix-up. So a ten-gallon hat is a hat with a braiding around the brim and did not refer to the holding capacity of the hat. When Texas cowboys misunderstood the word "galón" for "gallon," the popular, though incorrect, legend was born." (Source unknown- internet circular)
