Since the majority (>70%) of San Diegans cannot afford to buy a home in San Diego where the median cost is more than $550,000, the city council has agreed to slash fee by more than 60 percent on the construction of companion units also known as granny flat.

Through the reductions of such fees, San Diego is encouraging construction of affordable housing in hopes of reducing the housing crisis. The new law is geared towards homeowners who have a home with extra space in their yard or garage to add a granny flat.

On average, rent is $1,700 a month with many families spending approximately 30 percent of their income on housing. By taking advantage of these lowered fees and even how-to-manuals for building a granny flat within city standard, affordable options for housing should be on the rise.

Would you consider having a granny flat built on your property?
