JUNE CONTEST: YOU are the CEO of NAR! What will you Change?

Last month's ActiveRain contest winning post, written by Fred Griffin, was very well-received and judging by the number of comments on his entry post, something that many members are passionate about. As per the previous contest winner's benefits, I am hosting this contest for Fred. However, Fred has been ever-so gracious and will be judging this contest!

The contest details & rules are as follows:

The Challenge:

What would YOU do if you were given complete control of the National Association of Realtors®?  You are Chairman of the Board, and the CEO.  The Board of Directors will yield to whatever you say.  The Membership has granted you carte blanche.  Tell us how you will elevate NAR to its former glory!

_______________________________

Reviewing the Situation:

Many NAR members are up in arms.  There are objections to the dues increase.  The new $250,000 logo was shelved after an uproar.  Members feel left in the dark; they want to know how their dues are being spent.  The sale of our brand, Realtor.com, has left a festering wound.  And, there is great concern that NAR leaders are rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, as we approach the iceberg of Zillow, Redfin, and Opendoor.

The Rules:

Present your plan to restore the National Association of Realtors® to its rightful place as the Real Estate Industry leader!  What will NAR do for its members?  What will NAR do for the buying and selling public (the real estate consumers)?  How will NAR help its Members achieve technological superiority over competing real estate business models?

*For non-agent/broker ActiveRain members, write a post about your professional organization - does it need revamping? What are the positive benefits of membership? What would you change if you were running the organization?

  • Keep it positive!
  • 200 Word Minimum post
  • Include at least one image, graphic, photo, or video.
  • Submit your entry LINK in the comment section BELOW.

*** There can be NO posts or comments recommending a "standard" or minimum commission amount, or any discussion that might suggest price fixing or collusion among Realtors®.  Please avoid discussing the rates and commissions of Purplebricks, Redfin, or other companies.

The Opportunities that can come from this Challenge:

  • A chance to consider the value and the viability of NAR.
  • The opportunity to forward and present great ideas on reforming NAR to your local Board, or to key industry mouthpieces like Inman and ActiveRain.

_______________________________

Points:

  • 1,000 points per post.  Limit of two entries.

TOP 3 outstanding posts will be awarded bonus points as follows:

  • 1st Place Entry  - 5,000 points
  • 2nd Place Entry - 2,500 points
  • 3rd Place Entry - 1,500 points

Judges:

The honorable judges for the contest are Fred GriffinRichard Bazinet /MBA, CRS, ABR and Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor, ePRO, CRS, RCS-D. Thank you all for your support and for taking on this time-consuming job, during your very busy real estate markets.  You are appreciated!

NAR Contest Judges

Because our judges are also quite passionate about this topic, they will be welcomed to enter the contest but, to make it fair to all, they will not be awarded points for the win. ONLY THE TOP 3 WINNERS WHO ARE NOT JUDGES WILL BE AWARDED BONUS POINTS FOR THE WIN.

What would you do if you were given complete control of the National Association of Realtors®?  You are Chairman of the Board, and the CEO.  The Board of Directors will yield to whatever you say; the Membership has granted you carte blanche.  Tell us how you will elevate NAR (or your professional organization) to its former glory!

IF YOU WONDERED WHY ZILLOW BOUGHT DOTLOOP...

Just a little over two years ago, about the time Zillow acquired the transaction management upstart DotLoop, Zillow CEO said that Zillow was in the business of selling ads, not houses. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Time changes everything, or perhaps, IT discloses the truth behind denials. Zillow, following the footsteps of upstart iBuyer companies Opendoor and Offerpad, now wants to compete in what it sees as a $1.8 trillion (yes, that's a "T") home market. I can't wait to become a salaried agent.Show less

Zillow changes the game again

Seattle-based juggernaut will dive deep into the new world of fast-and-furious home transactions

Elsa Owsley I agree with all your thoughts. But how do we get the rest of the realtors to pay attention to what these companies are doing to our industry. We created a monster by granting them this data. Now, how do we fix it? I don't understand why NAR is silent to this. It's very disappointing.

Dirk Schroeder NAR has no control over Zillow and only limited say in Realtor.com (they own the domain name). The individual agents and brokers are in control over Zillow by their decision to provide their listing data and dollars to them. Should Zillow get into the real estate business it will be the end of them since no sane Realtor will want their competitor to use their listings or to pay Zillow dollars to promote their listings. I have never paid Zillow a dime.

Bill Morrow I am amazed that we as "professionals" who depend on own lead generation for our very survival, so willingly give mega competitors what we have worked for free and then turn around and pay them to retrieve our own data. This isn't only Zillow and Realtor.com, it is also Coast Star and Loop Net. In our own greed we have given control of our industry to outsiders. It is time to take back what we have worked so hard for, revert to local MLS systems and associations and willingly share our data only with people with in our industry. The consumer will find us if Zillow Disappears.

Steve Roy I am sure the local MLS operators can drop Zillow, Realtor.com and Trulia. But that is not the only feed into these sites. Our corporate owners also funnel the same listings back into those sites. If we truly want to protect ourselves from those scavengers raping us for our hard work we will need the backing and support of the mighty corporations a lot of us are connected to.
Also a major restructuring of the Realtor organization is in order. We have been taken advantage of far too long

Eric Frensdorf Steve Roy I agree 100% seems that all Realtors agree as well but to take the first step seems to be the issue. It would seem the first step in this process would be to take offf the option of listing the property on zillow that is asked on the initial listing paperwork. I fall guilty to this as well and always just mark yes to the zillow feed. Our association seems to have changes every day with the current forms we use, this needs to be taken off ASAP

Maureen Karpinski
Maureen Karpinski Last month Signpost Homes Inc. purchased 6630 S. Nash Way Chandler Arizona . It was purchased directly by Zillow renovated and put back on market by Sign Post Homes Inc. their own company. I have asked people in the industry and close to the associations to see if anyone is getting something going to deal with this situation. I don't think anything will happen until the Realtors say Enough! Until we put pressure on MLS and stop letting them feed our listings to Zillow nothing will happen. It is a concern that the support bodies for Realtors isn't having any voice .We Have a problem and if ignored, We lose!

Theodora Choros
Hi everyone I am a broker in Massachusetts and I know that our MLS gives the option to the brokers to NOT allow the listings to go to Zillow or any other site. That must be an office decision and a broker decision.
Unfortunately, sellers are so convinced that their house will not sell unless it is advertised on those sites that it becomes a catch 22. Unless 100% of the Realtor membership is in agreement, then it is pointless as there will be offices that will make every effort to under cut so they can get the listing. Not that I am saying this is good or bad: just how it works.
I am in total agreement that we must take some action.

Mark Ginder We can stop zillow in its tracks, it will take everyone of us to do it. They are an non licensed third party advertiser using copywrited material making fools and money out of the Real Estate Industry. They are their own MLS monopoly. We have an organization (NAR) and it's time we move on this to protect society from them.

Thank you for your fabulous entries, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS,. I don't believe one single member would argue with any of your points...well, unless they are long-term Board members!

Seriously very common-sensical points that I hope are read by the Association. Thank you so much for your entry, Paul.

OH my gosh, I totally missed all of this great information, Patricia Feager! Thank you so much for sharing!

One point that everyone seems to always blame NAR for is them taking a hold of the ZTR services - well, the onus is on US - the individual members AND our local and state Boards. WHY do we continue to 'give' them our data to sell? It just makes ZERO sense to me.

Thanks again for sharing, Patricia - I've got some readin' to do!
