Leave it on the Lawn

Leave it on the Lawngrass
This message was provided by the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Mowing season is upon on. The City's Environmental Services Division encourages you to grasscycle. Leaving chopped grass clippings on the lawn allows them to serve as fertilizer, and it is the most environmentally beneficial method of dealing with them. Here are a few tips:
  • Set blade height on mower to 3"
  • Leave grass clippings where they fall on the lawn, but away from storm drains
  • Cut grass regularly so that clippings decompose quickly
  • Sharpen mowing blades at the beginning of the season
  • Mow the lawn when dry
  • Water the lawn only when necessary with about one inch of water
  • Water in the morning to minimize evaporation

Roy, I sometimes mow without the bag, but don't like the grass clipping on my shoes.   After mowing, they always make their way into my house....

This is wonderful advice.  When had laws in Los Angeles, the gardener would put the clippings in our compost barrel, so the garden benefited that way.  A

Good morning Roy. I thought that leaving the cuttings on the live grass kill the underlying grass.
